Who we are
Suraka, the marketing arm of CPALI (www.cpali.org), designs and sells one of a kind jewelry made from wild, Malagasy, silk. 100% of our profits are reinvested in the CPALI program.
Our program is based on market draw—not subsidy—and allows farmers to establish self-sustaining enterprises and achieve financial independence.
What we do
We teach farmers produce silk spun by wild, endemic species of silkworm that are found in the environments in which they live. The moths feed on native, Malagasy plants that are intercropped on family farms, planted to build up protective border forests, or to recover pasture and degraded land. We pay no salaries and all participants are voluntary, however, we are building a market for CPALI products. Our program is based on market draw—not subsidy—and allows farmers to establish self-sustaining enterprises and achieve new financial means independent of foreign aid. Our farmers who previously produced only enough for subsistence, are able to earn income that can be used for education, health care, or other needs.
Where we work
Suraka/CPALI projects are located in the border forests of the Makira Protected Area, in North eastern, Madagascar. We are in the process of scaling up our program and hope to engage 500 farmers by the end of 2012.
